Green Awareness and Advocacy

Dr. Rose Johnson, president of Haywood Community College in Clyde, NC, recently gave a presentation titled “Shift Happens” to the North Carolina Community College System’s Code Green Leadership Team of the North Carolina Association of Community College Presidents. The PowerPoint presentation raises important issues related to awareness of global environmental issues that affect us all.

Dr. C. H. “Rusty” Stephens, president of Wilson Community College in Wilson, NC, has provided a Sustainability Resource List, featuring books, journal articles and other publications focused on climate change, energy independence, and environmental responsibility.

The Apollo Alliance is a coalition of business, labor, environmental, and community leaders working toward a cleaner-energy future by the reduction of dependence on foreign oil, decrease in carbon emissions, and expansion of green opportunities for American businesses and workers.

NEW: The National Governors Association Center for Best Practices has released profiles highlighting each state’s efforts to build green economies. The profiles are designed to provide “a detailed, empirical account of each state’s existing assets across multiple green sectors and serve as a foundation for identifying future growth areas and related needs.”

The U.S. Climate Action Partnership (USCAP) is a group of businesses and environmental organizations that has issued a set of recommendations calling for federal legislation reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

The U.S. Conference of Mayors Climate Protection Center provide mayors with guidance and assistance in leading their cities’ efforts to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions.

The U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) offers resources devoted to sustainability. including information focusing on the Built Environment; Water, Ecosystems & Agriculture; Energy; and Materials & Toxics, and citizen involvement
